Evolving Music Series, Mondays creative jazz
For 9 years running, Evolving Music (formerly the Club Series, and the RUCMA series) has been AFA's showcase for original creative music, presenting multiple performances each Monday.
We are committed to presenting original works from a diverse range of musical approaches that are being explored in today's music. This would include traditional as well as non-traditional compositional techniques in addition to structured and free improvisation forms. We present original compositions by emerging and mid-career artists who are fluent in these forms.
The series has taken place at Clemente Soto Velez for over a year. The first Monday of each month is a tribute performance that sheds light on great artists who are no longer with us. Thus we give a sense of history and legacy. As part of the tribute we include an intergenerational big band - the Sound Band - that performs the music of this artist. On the third week of each month we feature the Creative Sounds of Dissension to give time and space to dissenting voices. A few times throughout the year, we present the music of diverse college bands so that they get a real life presenting experience and more importantly they can hear what students from different backgrounds are doing in music.
These initiatives within the series are an example of an on-going commitment to building content and context for the art we present.
