Juan Pablo Carletti was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He grew up in a musical environment in which his father played percussion, and Juan was instantly drawn to the drums. As he performed with a variety of bands, he focused mainly on improvised music and playing mainstream jazz. He began working with his own projects and created a small label dedicated to new music. In 2005, Juan traveled to New York City and played with the David Haney Group and Andrew Cyrille at Cornelia Street Cafe. This trip was a pivotal turning point in his life, as he met influential musicians such as Mat Maneri, Tony Malaby, Mark Helias, Nasheet Waits, and Gerald Cleaver. One year later, he officially moved to America to continue his musical journey. He has recorded two records for the Lithuanian label NoBusiness, the last one a duo with Rob Brown. He has performed with Mat Maneri, Angelica Sanchez, Kris Davis, Marshall Allen, James Brandon Lewis, Melanie Dryer and Joe Morris. He has participated in several ensembles lead by William Parker including “in Order to Survive”. He also continues to explore music with young talents from New York City such as Hery Paz, Hans Young Binter, and Kenneth Jimenez. He teaches Art and Music to young people (kindergarteners to 8th graders). His vision is reflected by his approach to the drum set, with his influences rooted in African drumming and South American rhythms. He continues to expand his palette and incorporate instruments such as the bombo leguero from his native Argentina.
