Peter Brötzmann (1941- 2023) is a renowned German saxophonist, clarinetist, and one of the most influential figures in free jazz and avant-garde music. Born in 1941 in Germany, he gained international recognition for his fierce, uncompromising playing style, particularly with his powerful, raw sound on the tenor saxophone. Brötzmann’s 1968 album Machine Gun is considered a landmark in the development of free jazz, known for its intense, high-energy improvisation. Over his long career, he collaborated with a wide array of musicians, including American jazz icons like William Hooker, Fred Anderson, and Han Bennink, as well as experimental artists such as Keiji Haino and Mats Gustafsson. His work continues to challenge traditional boundaries of jazz, cementing his place as a key figure in avant-garde and improvised music.
