Born in Newark, NJ, Steve Swell has been a prominent figure in the New York City music scene since 1975, known for his versatility across a wide spectrum of genres. He has performed with legendary musicians like Lionel Hampton and Buddy Rich, as well as avant-garde icons such as Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, and William Parker. With over 50 albums as a leader or co-leader and contributions to more than 125 other releases, Swell’s extensive discography showcases his deep influence in jazz and beyond. In addition to his performance career, he is an active educator, conducting workshops worldwide and working with special needs students in New York City schools. Swell’s contributions to the arts have earned him numerous accolades, including Trombonist of the Year awards from the Jazz Journalists Association and recognition in the Downbeat Critics Poll. His 2016 album Soul Travelers was named Album of the Year by The New York City Jazz Record.
