Bio

Dave Sewelson, born in Oakland, California, in 1952, is a versatile musician whose journey through various instruments ultimately led him to specialize in the baritone saxophone. After starting with trumpet at nine, he explored the baritone horn, drums, and electric bass before settling on the saxophone at age 21. Arriving in New York City in 1977, Sewelson became a prominent figure in the downtown scene, performing with bands such as the 25 O’Clock Band, Jemeel Moondoc’s Jus Grew Orchestra, and the Microscopic Septet, as well as founding the Microscopic Septet and being a lifetime member of William Parker’s Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra. He has collaborated with legendary musicians including Billy Bang, John Zorn, and Sunny Murray. In addition to his performance career, Sewelson hosts a weekly radio show on WFMU’s Give the Drummer Radio Stream, where he engages in conversation and live improvisation with guest artists.
